Sunshine and Shadows
2021 ANNUAL JURIED EXHIBITION
The Atlantic Highlands Arts Council is pleased to announce our Annual Juried Competition for 2021. For this exhibit, we seek conceptual and technical interplays of “Sunshine and Shadow.” The words are opposing by nature, but how can the artist find harmony and balance in this dichotomy? How does the whimsy of a bright, fleeting moment, compare to the weight of the darkness we’ve been struggling through in contemporary life?
We welcome the artist’s interpretation of “Sunshine & Shadows” in all its forms. Our jurors will review entries in all media in two or three-dimensions. We are pleased to announce this year’s jurors, Ji Yong Kim and Michael Cagno.
Ji Yong Kim was born and raised in South Korea. His works are often inspired from his experience from Myanmar where he spent his adolescent years. His drawings and painting investigate parallel between formal abstraction, Buddhist spirituality, and popular culture. He received his B.F.A. from Rhode Island School of Design, and M.F.A. from Montclair State University in New Jersey. He is currently an instructor of drawing, painting and foundation courses in Raritan Valley Community College in New Jersey. He is a resident artist in ChaShaMa located in the Brooklyn Army Terminal. He lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.
From 1999- 2006, Michael Cagno served as the Executive Director for the Riverfront Renaissance Center for the Art in Millville, New Jersey. During his tenure in Millville, Michael worked with government and community organizations to revitalize its downtown by using the arts as a catalyst for economic development and social transformation. Since August 2006, Michael has served as Executive Director of The Noyes Museum of Art of Richard Stockton University. This partnership has allowed the museum to increase its capacity to make the arts more accessible and inclusive for residents of southern New Jersey. Today the Noyes Museum operates facilities in Hammonton and Atlantic City.
Michael currently serves on the Board of Trustees as Vice-President for the Mid-Atlantic Association of Museum, Cumberland County Cultural and Heritage Commission, Ducktown Neighborhood Association, Chairman of the National Building Museums Symposium and has served as board member for the New Jersey Association of Museums, Art Pride NJ and the South Jersey Cultural Alliance as Vice President. Having a Bachelors Degree in Fine Art from Rowan University, Masters Degree in Museum in Management and a Graduate Certificate in Arts Administration from Seton Hall University has allowed Michael to follow his passion for the arts. He also shares this passion as an adjunct arts professor at Cumberland County College and Stockton University.
