(Name of Township) Board of Education, Board of Education President (Name), and (Superintendent Name),
As a group of (Name of Township) residents, parents, former students and taxpayers, we find it incumbent upon ourselves to provide our input to your organization.
We’re writing to you today to express our unequivocal support for both the newly-adopted Health and Phys Ed standards from the New Jersey Department of Education, as well as the previously-passed legislation requiring schools to include LGBTQ and Disabled people in curriculum.
We know that the health and wealth of our community are its students and its public schools. Children have a right to the highest-quality education we can offer them, which includes fact-based curriculum, written and taught by experts. Children deserve to learn how to determine what is and is not appropriate consent, to learn facts about their own bodies, and to learn about the diverse spectrum of human existence. All studies and available information show that when kids are provided the proper information and emotional tools, they are less-likely to be manipulated and exploited. And when all students learn in inclusive atmospheres, there are lower reported rates of bullying, self-harm and violence among classmates. Why wouldn’t we support that?
Allowing the actions of our Board of Education to be co-opted and compromised by the extremist beliefs of a vocal minority shows a distinct lack of solidarity with our teachers and school administrators and does nothing to serve our students. We urge you to consider this viewpoint in the upcoming weeks and months as these discussions continue and school boards across our state are becoming political tools and targets- it is critical that (Name of Township) supports the institution and integrity of our public schools program and the health and well-being of our students.
In this interest, we respectfully request (Superintendent Name) or another informed educator address the Board and Board meeting attendees in a scholarly and balanced presentation of the curriculum and standards as outlined by the legislation and the Department of Education as a measure of combatting misunderstanding and disinformation.
Sincerely,
(Name/Street Name)
