Hello Monmouth County !

Another warm morning; walking past the houses with their little green lights proving the electricity will
still work even if the grid goes down. I want one of those generators. Sounds of jet engines mixing
with early morning crickets and birds; walking past the piles of collected broken branches. The last
storm that blew down so many trees and dumped so much water! After those tornados I admit I was
spooked.

Stormwater going into Claypit Creek

Walking down the soft banks of Claypit Creek my feet sink into the soil and I can see how the last
storm pushed so much water into the storm sewer pipes that at the outfall the water created a trench
that didn’t used to be there before. One of the oldest Monmouth County government agencies is the
Freehold Soil Conservation District.
“In the 1930’s our nation was dealing with mounting erosion, floods and sky-blackening dust storms that swept
across the country. Poor farming practices left large amounts of land exposed to the elements and erosion
claimed huge amounts of topsoil. In 1937 President Roosevelt urged all states to encourage local participation
in soil conservation and in June 1938 the Freehold Soil Conservation District was incorporated; the first district
in the State of New Jersey.”

Living Shore Line

I feel lucky because I grew up with some woods near-by. Now that I am older I get to help make
sure the next kids do too. I would like to use this forum to explore the edges between the land and
the sea near my house. The edges between the land in the water. The Littoral Society put in a
“Living Shoreline” on the edge of the park and the creek at the Claypit Creek section of Hartshorn
Woods
• 1960 Dr. Lional A. Walford of the Sandy Hook Marine Lab founded the American
Littoral Society to be a bridge between science and the public.

Monmouth County organizations have tried to ensure the natural environment stays healthy so we do
to for almost 100 years!
